A Rising Arm with Lao Roots

For many athletes, the journey to high-level baseball begins with a single sport. For Tai Phetluangsy, it started with all of them.

Growing up in Amarillo, Texas, Phetluangsy was a multi-sport athlete, competing in track, football, and basketball before ultimately narrowing his focus to baseball. His natural athleticism stood out early, and through club competition and consistent development, he began to carve out a path in the sport that would define his future.

At Tascosa High School, Phetluangsy initially made his mark as an infielder, showcasing his speed, arm strength, and instincts. He was recruited by colleges as a middle infielder, but like many versatile athletes, his trajectory evolved. As he progressed to the collegiate level, he transitioned to the mound where his athletic background and arm talent translated into a promising pitching career.

His college journey reflects both persistence and growth. Phetluangsy began at Odessa College before continuing at Panola College. He then spent two impactful seasons at West Texas A&M University, where he emerged as a key bullpen arm. During his time there, he etched his name into the program’s history, finishing sixth all-time in saves, a testament to his reliability in high-pressure situations.

Phetluangsy later advanced to Tarleton State University as a graduate student, continuing to refine his craft at the Division I level. Over his collegiate career, he developed into a right-handed relief pitcher known for his competitiveness and ability to close out games. His statistical record reflects steady progress, including multiple saves and strong strikeout production across college and summer leagues.

Beyond the college season, Phetluangsy expanded his experience internationally, playing summer baseball in Canada—an opportunity that exposed him to different styles of play and further sharpened his skills.

Off the field, his focus has remained just as strong. He earned a degree in Sports & Exercise Science and is pursuing a master’s in Sports Management, preparing for a future that could include coaching or continuing his playing career overseas.

At the heart of his journey is a proud Lao heritage. His father, Savath Phetluangsy, was born in Vientiane, Laos, and immigrated to the United States at a young age. After initially settling in Alabama, the family eventually made their home in Amarillo, Texas, where Tai was raised. Savath is a decorated military veteran having served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Amarillo is known for a large Lao community that sprung up when the newly arrived refugees were attracted to the area for jobs in the meat packing plants. Several other athletes that we have featured have ties to the community including Lo Van Pham and Angelina Messina

With aspirations of being drafted and a clear vision for his future in baseball, Tai Phetluangsy represents more than just athletic success, he represents perseverance, adaptability, and cultural pride.
